Travelled in a southerly direction today, taking in...
A late-afternoon tea room whose sixteen-year-old attendant didn't drink tea and couldn't advise us on the house blend except to say it was a blend, of, you know, tea...
A small-town thrift shop with baskets of fat cucumbers and crab apples by the till and a tow-headed hutterite girl who tried not to stare at the borrowed baby I was wheeling around...
Roland, MB. September 1, 2005.
A back-yard arbour, the grapes tiny yet bearing four pits each, the clusters plumpening, plumpening under the sun, a month away from harvest...
And a bustling highway burger- shack, the setting sun blaring on the concrete, the men with deep-set wrinkles around their eyes from smiling, and all that goddamn meat.
And the summer was in tatters, in tatters, all around me.
