Photo Assiniboine Forest, Wpg, Mb. August 29, 2006.

* * *

According to the Forest Administrator - who will soon be arranging a tour of Assiniboine Forest's familiar trails for me with a naturalist in tow (I'll have names for things! Names!) - this is a Bidens frondosa (aka Beggars Tick). This particular plant and its million million cousins have taken over the edges of Assiniboine Forest, long since abandoned by the spring's surges of clover and even the burbling frogsong of the waterlogged spring before that.

I recognize the seeds, having found them on the ankles of my socks, but don't recall the plant itself, the glorious purpled leaves, the tiny tiny yellow flowers...but maybe this year, with at least part of my awareness always focussed elsewhere, it takes a profusion of something, a wash of colour or scent, to get my attention.

I'd love to go on a tour like that! Is this something they do every so often?

Your photos are stunning as ever, Ariel.

Thanks, you two...

Anita, you're welcome to join me on my tour, which is tentatively scheduled for two weeks from now...or you can call the Forest Administrator (her name is Natalie Swayze) at 986-7234 to arrange your own tour.
