hoary

Grey photos for a grey day, though it wasn't grey yesterday when I shot them.

I spent several hours in the forest alone, while Aa rampaged at the in-laws and M sat in the car in the parking lot with his book and his swollen toe (he tripped over the baby gate at the bottom of our stairs at home, leaping gazelle that he is...).

And while I didn't have a specific destination in mind, I was quite pleased to find myself in front of the heaps of grey logs just past the new limestone path. Given that I had no baby to baby-backpack hoist and no only-somewhat-impatient partner to placate, I was able to climb to my heart's content.

And I do like to climb - my sense of balance is one of the things I'm vain about. Combine this attribute with a desire to explore and see things from altogether odd vantage points, and I'm forever climbing.

From previous grievously-cut-short climbs in and among the logs, which have weathered a lovely grey over the years, I knew that mushrooms grew on their trunks, so off I went.

And while I shot other pics yesterday that properly reflect the sun-shot nature of the afternoon, I prefer these.

I was half looking for the hectare of forest burnt last weekend but didn't wind up there...and looking back, I'm glad. Even though I lean towards the beautiful/ugly, it wasn't the sort of day to contemplate a stand of burnt trees.

Lovely, although it looks like tiny fingers trying to get out.
