* Doug Whiteway, this year's Winnipeg Public Library writer in residence, will give a farewell reading at the Millennium Library's Pattison Reading Garden at 7 p.m. Thursday.
* Winnipeg young adult fantasy writer Duncan Thornton has another series in the works, Vastlands, this one with Toronto / Vancouver - based Annick Press.
* Watermelon Syrup, a novel co-authored by Canadians Annie Jacobsen, Jane Finlay-Young and Di Brandt, has been awarded a gold medal in the fiction category at the American ForeWord Book of the Year Awards.
* Closer to home, the Manitoba Writers' Guild will launch the fourth instalment of its Poetry in Motion promotion in June. Poems by eight Manitoba poets, including Meira Cook and Sharon Caseberg, will appear on placards in Winnipeg Transit buses.
