the damage, day four & five

The last week in the old store. I was doing so well, selling a few books and writing a few Events Coordinator-type emails, when Kelly arrived, limping.

He'd brought a U-Haul and several of the people who currently work for him. And they proceeded to box up the back room.

Which contained a small work bench for Kelly, a food prep nook that contained a microwave older than I am, miscellaneous furniture that included the 30 or so chairs used for events, and shelf after shelf of duplicates.

I was doing well, that is, until I started taping boxes together and filling them with duplicates.
Books:

Voltaire's Bastards / The Doubter's Companion by John Ralston Saul (Penguin, 1995)(box set)

The Book of Small by Emily Carr (Clarke, Irwin & Company, 1966)

Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam (Random House, 2006)

Behindlings by Nicola Barker (HarperCollins, 2002)(UK edition)

What the Crow Said by Robert Kroetsch (University of Alberta Press, 1998) (reprint of 1978 original)

The Cure for Death by Lightning by Gail Anderson-Dargatz (Random House, 1997)

The PennyWhistle Lunch Box Book by Meredith Brokaw & Annie Gilbar (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1989)

Ephemera:

Fresh Vegetables from MANITOBA by The Manitoba Vegetable Producers' Marketing Board (pamphlet, undated)

Remember Me Calendar by Alzheimer Manitoba (perpetual calendar with images by Gerri Borowski, undated)

2 sheets of Arthur's Thanksgiving Placecards by Scholastic (punch-out placecards, 1996)

Then things started leaping into my arms and curling themselves around me, the EXACT same way Aa does when she's glad to see me or is trying to avoid eating / napping / getting dressed / bathing / getting her hair/teeth brushed.

And these things weren't even priced! Most of them didn't even look like they'd ever been read!

But considering I packed nearly a dozen boxes while Kelly and his crew were officially moving the back room and seven more after they left, I did okay.

And I have no idea what each book cost, since Kelly pulled some number from the air, divided it in half, and then added GST.

And The Book of Small he didn't charge me for, because he was too tired to bother ringing it up. Ditto the ephemera.

(Oh the ephemera!)

*sigh* are we going to have to build those bookshelves we bought then decided not to put together? Am I going to have to get another job just to pay for your new job buying books from Kelly? — M
